Life in Weeks
This is a rough accounting of my life, approximated by weeks. Each week is represented by a tiny box. When something significant is recalled, be it joy or sorrow, it’s added here.
I was inspired to make this page after seeing Buster Benson’s.
👶 Born in Washington
A lifelong affinity for the west coast is in my genes.
🎁 Nintendo 64
Opening a Nintendo 64 on Chirstmas day is one of my fondest childhood memories.
✝️ Responded to the gospel
Kelly and Justin had been telling me about Jesus. A woman on a stage presented the gospel with clarity, calling for responses. I went to a tent, prayed with a guy named Michael for the gift of the Holy Spirit, and everything was different.
🚚 Moved to Lexington
Graduating high school was met with the decision of where to pursue higher education. I briefly considered Purdue in Indiana, but ended up staying in my old Kentucky home.
👀 Meet Emily for the first time
The student center no longer stands, but I still see her through that door pane as clear as the day it happened.
👨💻 First job as a programmer
I received a salary from a government agency.
🇬🇧 First international travel
A fortnight in a small coastal town. I missed out on BBC programming because I opted out of television for the entire trip. A lot of journaling and reflection.
👨💻 First time having a last day
I learned that government bureaucracy is not the environment for my desired rhythms.
Introduced to Mars Hill Church Podcast
Beginning a decade of spiritual growth, eventual disenfranchisement with reformed theology, and a lot of hard earned lessons.
👩❤️💋👨️ Emily and I begin dating
We define the relationship over burrito bowls.
👩❤️💋👨️ Married to Emily
We had Guitar Hero at our reception.
🚚 Move to Seattle
Emily and I moved across the country for me to accept a position at Mars Hill.
👨💻 First day at Mars Hill
At the end of the first week I told Emily “I can’t put my finger on it, but something isn’t right here. They’re not smoking what they’re selling.”
👨💻 Last day at Mars Hill
I committed to staying through Easter because the production was such a big deal.
👨💻 First day at Planning Center
Joined a dream team of eight developers.
🦌 First trip to Portland
Railsconf 2013. The entire development team attended. All eight of us. Screen Door fried chicken becomes the standard for all fried chicken going forward.
🐈 Zelda is rescued
Our first family pet is an 8 week old kitten. The naming constraints were “a Nintendo name” and “a princess name”. Princess Zelda reigns.
